Today was a tiring but exhilarating trip. On July 3rd and 4th, yesterday and today, I had a 30-hour, quick turnaround trip to the Los Angeles area to be interviewed on TBN. The guest host for the night was Kirk Cameron, the actor who grew up on the television show ‘Growing Pains’ and has since moved into quite a few movies with a faith based message. I was really looking forward to meeting him. He invited me to come on the show as a relationship expert and marriage expert to talk about the marriage scenes in his new movie coming out at the end of September. The movie is called ‘FIREPROOF’ and it's basically about a hero fire fighter who is a hero to everybody but his wife and their marriage is falling apart. He realizes just what it means to learn to love his wife unconditionally. The movie in the screening has been getting wonderful reviews.
So this is some of the advance promotions for ‘FIREPROOF’. I absolutely enjoyed meeting not only Kirk Cameron, but the producer of the movie, Stephen Kendrick, a pastor of the church that produced the movie, Michael Catt. These are the same individuals who did the movie Facing the Giants, which was a surprise hit. It cost a hundred thousand dollars to produce and made $10 million at the box office. They are hoping and praying that ‘FIREPROOF’ does at least twice that.
As I was reflecting on this trip, I realized again, just how incredibly critical it is to get movies with good, healthy messages about real life, with really good stories out to people. Since for many people, movies are their pulpit and what they absorb into the heart and mind, are those messages. It's a delight to be able to meet people and be encouraged by people who really are doing that. So I was really blessed by this trip personally, and it also made me very much look forward to the day, hopefully not too far in the future, when our best friends, Lisa and Eric Rice, find their screenplay on John Newton and is finally put into development. This process begins this fall so we're all hoping and praying for their success as well.
So I encourage everybody out there to go see the movie ‘FIREPROOF’ when it comes out at the end of September. Because the first weekend at the box office is absolutely critical in the movie business and it determines whether a movie gets invited to go on more and more screens over the next few weeks or whether it quietly dies. The other movie that I really encourage people to go see is by the same producer who hopes to make Lisa and Eric's movie. This movie is coming out on August 8th, and is called ‘The Perfect Game’. It's about a true story of a Mexican Little League team that won the Little League World Series 70 or so years ago, it's a heartwarming story. That's another one which the first weekend at the box office will be critical for this family friendly faith based movie. I continue to see how working in and trying to impact Hollywood is one of the most important things that we can do.
